Rehydrate first
Watery stools move fluid and electrolytes out of the body quickly. Oral rehydration solution replaces both in the right proportions — plain water alone does not.
Then consider the cause
Most acute episodes in healthy adults are self-limiting and viral. Recent travel, a new medicine or a recent course of antibiotics are all worth noting and mentioning.
Seek advice without delay if
- There is blood in the stool, or a high fever
- Symptoms last more than two or three days
- The person affected is a baby, is frail or elderly, or is pregnant
- There are signs of dehydration: little urine, dizziness, confusion
